The acquisition of past and recent images of Wakefield District, the old West Riding and Yorkshire forms an important element of Wakefield Art Gallery's fine art collections.
Wakefield attracted a number of artists from the 18th century onwards. They came to record the impressive and distinctive skyline as well as the Chantry Chapel on the medieval bridge.
In the watercolour opposite, the artists has captured the watermill in the foreground and boat-building activities on the headland site. In the background, you can see the medieval bridge and the Chantry Chapel.
The Chantry Chapel was considered to be Wakefield's architectural 'jewel' by visiting antiquaries and travellers and was more frequently painted and drawn than any other local subject.
