SABINE JEANNE BIELI
Wakefield Art Gallery is working with the Swiss born, Hull based artist Sabine Bieli on a new work to enrich the permanent collection prior to the move to The Hepworth Wakefield in 2009.This commission will bring the gallery's significant historical topographical collection up to date with a contemporary work for the 21st century.
Sabine is responding to the local landscape, both rural and industrial, and to the history of social change in the area. The people of Wakefield form a significant focus for this commission and are being involved in the research and development of the artwork.Wakefield people have been asked to share their memories, views or visions about Wakefield's past, present and future for inclusion in the new artwork. These words will be printed onto strips of transparent film, which will form the shape of a new sculpture entitled 'Wordscape'. This piece will link the collections at the current art gallery with the new displays planned for The Hepworth Wakefield. The project is co-funded by the Arts Council England.
