The most outstanding works on display from this period are by the world famous and locally born sculptors Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore.
Moore's most important pre-war carving, the Elmwood Reclining Figure, which Wakefield Art Gallery exhibited directly after its completion in 1936 and acquired for the permanent collection soon after, forms the centerpiece of this gallery. It is one of the most significant works of modern art produced in the 20th century and has featured in major exhibitions worldwide.
Also on display in this space are a number of Barbara Hepworth's most influential early carvings, notably Mother and Child (1934) and Pierced Hemisphere 1 (1937).
