British Art 1925 - 1950

Born in Denham, Buckinghamshire, Nicholson studied at the Slade School of Art from 1910-1911.  Lived abroad from 1912 to 1918 and married the artist Winifred Nicholson in 1920.  During the 1920’s he made regular visits to Paris and by the 1930’s he and his second wife Barbara Hepworth were one of the main links between the European avant-garde and British Modernism.

Piquet shows Nicholsons’ interest in the Cubist work of Picasso and Braque.

After his marriage to Hepworth was dissolved he married the photographer Felicitas Vogler and lived in Switzerland.
