Barbara Hepworth Works

INTRODUCTION

The most outstanding artworks in Wakefield’s permanent collection are by the world famous and locally born sculptors Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore. Hepworth was born in the city in 1903 and went to school at Wakefield Girls High School.

Like her friend and contemporary from Castleford, Hepworth is well known for large works in bronze and the public commissions which came to realisation towards the end of her career.

Hepworth was, however, first and foremost a carver of wood and stone and Wakefield’s collection contains some of her most important and influential early carvings, notably Mother and Child and Pierced Hemisphere, both carved in the 1930s.

The Gallery went on to acquire later examples of work by the artist, including both sculptures and drawings.

Seen in total this collection of work by Barbara Hepworth represents the diversity of her artistic output spanning all the important stages of her career.
