Wakefield and Yorkshire in Pictures

Wakefield attracted a number of artists from the 1700s onwards.

They came to record the impressive and distinctive skyline as well as the Chantry Chapel, on the medieval bridge.

This building was considered to be Wakefield’s architectural ‘jewel’ by visiting antiquaries and travellers, and was more frequently painted and drawn than any other local subject.

This engraving by Fleming is one of the earliest in the collection.  It shows an artist sitting on the banks of the Calder diligently drawing the Chantry Chapel and bridge.
