Visitors to Wakefield Art Gallery have until Sunday 26th June to see the special exhibition for Architecture Week of the new designs for The Hepworth, Wakefield.
Centrepiece of the display is a large model of the major new art gallery, designed by the highly acclaimed British architect David Chipperfield for an exciting site on Wakefield’s historic waterfront. The model is 1:50 in scale and is nearly seven feet long. It shows the very sculptural form of the building and how it will be sited on the River Calder overlooking the weir on the river and close to the historic buildings in the Waterfront conservation area. The model and displays also show the designs for the public garden outside the art gallery and the new footbridge across the River Calder.
Wakefield Council is developing The Hepworth, Wakefield as a major new art gallery on Wakefield’s historic waterfront, which will replace Wakefield’s current Art Gallery in 2008. It will feature the unique collection of Barbara Hepworth’s original plaster sculptures, Wakefield’s important art collections and a range of inspiring and creative activities.
Our vision for The Hepworth, Wakefield is that it will be an exciting and vibrant new building on Wakefield’s historic waterfront and a place where everyone can see the work of famous artists, enjoy Wakefield and Yorkshire’s heritage, get involved in creative and learning activities or just relax in the informal spaces.
