Wakefield Council has given the go ahead for work to begin on the city's Waterfront development.Planning permission for the first phase of the project was granted by the council's Planning and Highways Committee, enabling £13.5 million of public money to be released for the work to commence. The £100 million project will include a mix of high quality office, residential and leisure buildings across ten acres of land. A new £20 million art gallery (Hepworth Gallery) and formal gardens will also be built on the site. Councillor Phil Dobson, deputy leader and cabinet member for regeneration, said: "This is fantastic news for the people of Wakefield. This further piece of the jigsaw means that all of the funding is in place and that work will definitely start on the project next year. "This is a very exciting time for Wakefield as this will be the first major regeneration project to get underway. We hope that work on both Marsh Way and Westgate will also start sometime next year."
