Two of the most outstanding British sculptors of the 20th century, Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth, were born within a few miles of Wakefield Art Gallery. The Gallery holds a large collection of some of their most significant work, including sculptures, drawings and paintings.
Arts and Kids funding will help to deliver an innovative and exciting project in Wakefield. Five local schools will be given the opportunity to work in partnership with Wakefield Art Gallery and the project team developing the Hepworth, Wakefield, a new purpose built facility designed by leading international architect David Chipperfield. Students will take part in artist led workshops, explore plans and models of the new gallery, visit the building site during construction, and have the chance to talk to designers and builders about the new build.
Students will then work with artists and learning staff to create pieces of artwork inspired by both the old and new gallery. It is hoped that the student’s artwork and ideas will form part of an installation within the Hepworth, Wakefield and give the young people ownership of their new gallery.
The project will go a long way to developing new long-term partnerships with local schools and communities, and enable young people to learn and develop through creativity and enjoyment.
