Vote for your favourite work of art

It's time for voters to go to the polls - and decide what they want to see at Wakefield Art Gallery's next exhibition.

Photographs of more than 100 of the district's works of arts will be available at the gallery from Saturday (October 13). Visitors are invited to inspect the works and then vote on what they would like to see in an exhibition called Personal Choice, which will open in December.

Cllr Clive Hudson, Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Sport, said: "Wakefield boasts an outstanding collection of 20th century art, much of which is rarely seen by the public due to limited display space. We decided that it would be a great idea to let the people choose which work should be on display at the next exhibition.

"Our curators have come up with a selection of more than 100 works and a professional photographer has taken high quality pictures of each. These will be on display from Saturday and we would like as many people as possible to visit the gallery between then and November 18 and vote for what they would like to see.

"That way we can ensure that Personal Choice truly will be a people's exhibition."

The most popular works chosen by visitors will be included in the exhibition along with those selected by groups of local schoolchildren, young people, amateur artists and one professional artist.

The exhibition will include oil paintings, watercolours, drawings, sculpture and ceramic work and aims to celebrate the quality and diversity of Wakefield's Art Collection. It will be an excellent opportunity for local people to explore the highlights of the collection in more depth before the gallery prepares for its move to The Hepworth Wakefield in 2009.

Those wishing to take part should visit the gallery at Wentworth Terrace, Wakefield between Saturday 13 October and Sunday 18 November 2007.   It is open Tuesday-Saturday 10.30am-4.30pm; Sunday 2pm-4.30pm. Admission is free.
