Temporary exhibitions at Wakefield Art Gallery

Paintings by Sonia Lawson RA
Saturday 13 September to Sunday 26 October 2008

Sonia Lawson is an artist with strong Yorkshire connections who was born in 1934, the year that Wakefield Art Gallery first opened its doors to the public.

Her mother and father, Fred Lawson and Muriel Metcalf, regularly exhibited at Wakefield Art Gallery from the mid 1930s onwards.

Sonia studied at Doncaster School of Art and the Royal College of Art, London. She went on to teach at various institutions including St Martin’s School of Art and at the Royal College of Art in London. Up until recently she has been a Visiting Lecturer at the Royal Academy Schools.

As a painter with a national reputation, her work provides a worthy and poignant end to Wakefield Art Gallery’s programming as it looks to close its doors in preparation for the move to The Hepworth Wakefield.

John Creed - Metalwork
Sat 8 November to Tuesday 23 December 2008

John Creed taught jewellery at Wakefield College of Art in the mid 1960s before moving to Scotland to take up a teaching post at Glasgow School of Art.

His career spans almost 50 years and has encompassed the whole spectrum of metalwork from site specific projects within the field of architecture to small precious decorative objects.

In acknowledgment of the history and scale of Wakefield Art Gallery, which was originally a Victorian town house, this exhibition explores John Creed's smaller work for the home and includes such diverse objects as coat, umbrella or music stands, vases, planters and items for use at the meal table. The work is innovative, original and sculptural and challenges conventional thought on the appearance of everyday objects.
